An Appropriate Approach to Radio Success

In recent times as a “neutral participant,” we’re more frequently involved in mediation and conflict resolution. There’s no “one-way” to improve a talent, advance a seller, or re-set a department head’s day-to-day posture. This week’s column takes a tangential approach, offering some pathways toward “bigger and better.”
- The “Lone Ranger” mentality has long passed; some may just not know it. In 2022, leaders win with their staff’s collaboration…or they eventually go down with their inflexibility.
- Loathe the trappings and titles of terminal professionalism.
- Dare to be outrageous by some standards.
- Fly in the face of the “we’ve always don’t it this way” myopia.
- “Bigger” isn’t always better. Don’t automatically assume “market share” is the same as profitability.
- At the peak of success, find the things you can do “just a little better.”
- Hire for attitude, train for advanced skills.
- Create and think like a lean organization; then it’s difficult to hide poor performance.
- Every Radio organization has to find a way to engage every employee.
- Train yourself to look beyond what you “see.” Things are rarely as they appear.
- Play to win…instead of “playing not to lose.”
- Own mistakes, share mistakes, learn from mistakes…and move on.
- Make heroes and heroines of staffers who exemplify your company’s values.
- The reality of our time is this: we’ve learned to love systems and all too often, only use people.
- If someone repeats the longstanding adage, “It’s easier to get to the top than it is to stay there,” forget it! Some sociologists might think so but few have an appreciation for the realities of business competition.
